Many systemic infectious diseases produce structural and functional changes in the liver which are occasionally noticed by jaundice in clinic.
I have observed recently a rare case of typhoid fever associated with jaundice and ascites which was impressed as a chronic liver disease with ascites clinically an woman aged 42, farmer , housewife.
Total serum bilirubin level revealed 8.7 mg% (direct; 4.7 mg% ), culture of the ascitic fluid showed Salmonella typhosa and Widal reaction revealed 1:640. Liver biopsy showed hydropic swelling of the liver cells-and mild mesenchymal reaction.
Jaundice and ascites were disappeared as the etiologic disease was controlled by chloramphenicol, prednisolone and supportive therapy for 3 weeks.
I reviewed references and discussed the mechanisms of jaundice and hepatic injury with ascites in typhoid fever.
